Yet Another PS3 Price Cut Rumor? Xbox 360, Too
June 28, 2009 by srfto

Okay, it’s starting to get hard to believe Sony’s claims that they aren’t going to cut prices on their PS3 console. It seems like every week there’s a new rumor coming from some dependable source saying that a price cut is imminent, and then Sony comes out and blabs about their “10-year life cycle” again and again. The latest source of a price cut rumor is an industry insider who got in touch with Ars Technica and told them the following:
As far as the PS3 is concerned, the 80GB model will start to be phased out of the market – that version of the console could become scarce in as little 60 days. Meanwhile, the 160GB model will become the prominent version. If the 160GB PS3 sells as well as the 80GB did, then Sony will move ahead its plan to cut prices sometime later this year, and launch the new PS3 Slim. Exactly how steep of a price drop, no one knows, but this source is considered very reliable, so at least we can be relatively confident that we’ll actually see a cut. You may want to hold on to your PS3 nest egg until the fall and see what develops.
In related news, the Xbox 360 will be seeing some price moves as well. The Pro model is going to be completely phased out. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Once that’s done, the 120GB Elite model (which currently sits at $399) will drop in price. It may go down to the Pro’s $299, or even lower if we’re lucky. Looks this holiday season will be a good time to be in the market for a new console.
