The ZeniMax Media acquisition of id Software, announced on June 24, 2009, will bring together two legendary game studios. ZeniMax Media Inc., the parent company of game publisher, Bethesda, Softworks intends for Bethesda Softworks to publish all id Software titles, with the exception of titles that are committed to other publishers. Todd Hollenshead, CEO of id Software, said, “This was a unique opportunity to team with a smart, sophisticated publisher like Bethesda Softworks where the interests of the studio and the publisher will be fully aligned in the development and marketing of our titles.”
The acquisition has the game world buzzing, because both Bethesda Softworks and id Software are legendary in their own right. Id Software created WOLFENSTEIN 3D, which was the original first-person shooter game. Id Software also made a name for itself through the release of DOOM and QUAKE. RAGE, will be the next highly anticipated addition to id Software titles.
Besides the blockbuster releases, id Software also led the way in creating the proprietary technology and id Tech engine that powers many of the notable FPS games. Similarly, Bethesda Game Studios without argument has produced some of the best games of all time. Bethesda, Softworks has won over 60 game of the year awards from highly respected media sources such as, The Associated Press, Official Xbox Magazine, and PC Gamer, to name a few. Games such as, FALLOUT 3, won the 2006 game of the year and THE ELDER SCROLLS IV: OBLIVION, won the 2008 game of the year. Both are ranked in the top ten games for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms.
The acquisition of id Software will add strength to strength to the game publishing industry because ZeniMax Media, through Bethesda Softworks, will provide id Software with the resources they need to expand and grow their titles.
