Another MW2 IW.net Fail – ISP Banning?

modernwarfare2It just seems more and more problems have been deriving out of Infinity Ward’s decision to neglect dedicated server support and their last minute plan P2P announcement with IW.net.

Gamers has been complaining that IW.net leads to threats from termination from their ISPs for “running servers on their home connection” and “excessive file sharing through peer to peer connections.” I am by no means an ISP security expert but I believe you have got to spend a whole lot of time playing to bring up that red flag.

Several gamers have been downgraded to dial-up or spend hectic phone conversations explaining the dilemma to their ISPs, some even faced higher phone bill charges. IW.net forces a good portion of MW2 players to violate the terms of most ISP providers as you can see here. I am curious, any of our readers have this issue yet?

I received a letter from time-warner cable which I would type out but it would take me 20 minutes. the letter basically says that they think I have a virus thats sending/receiving information.”when computers that are connected to the network become infected with viruses and other intrusions, serious problems can arise, such as degradation of network performance and he infection of other users” It directs to link for virus removal. I can assure you I do not have a virus as I did a fresh install of windows 7 the day before mw2 came out. I dont open any emails, and really the only thing I do on that computer is play games. Its my gaming computer, I use my laptop for everything else and I know 100% I do not have a virus nor have I had.

They say “We ask you to bear in mind that continued violations of the road runner acceptable use policy can result in suspension or even termination of your road runner account”
This is complete and utter bull crap. Thanks Infinity Ward/Activision for nearly getting my internet shutoff. Im done with this game.

I got a call from my ISP saying this:

Dear Customer
It has come to our attention that you are running servers on your home connection.
While this is not allowed, we inform you that measurements can be taken when continuos usage.
We regret to inform you that hosting servers at your home connection is not allowed, we have special packages for server connections.

Now this is translated from my native language, I had to call up my ISP and tell them the problem.
This is a serious problem, IW is just using your computer to host the games.
I work as a network admin myself and had to explain myself to my ISP why this is happening.
Most of the times i’m leaving games that i’m hosting because i don’t want my connection to be used as gameserver.

IW fails to see that UPnP and a open NAT is dangerous to your network.

Yeah now peoples internet bills are coming in, everyone is getting things like this. My friend got stuck with a $40 addition to his internet bill. Hes since deleted his game and wont touch it again because its not hardly worth that type of expense

i’ve already gotten a mail from my isp telling me they are reducing my 20 meg line to dial up speed for the next month for “excessive file sharing through peer to peer connections” and i will be cut off if i persist.
tried telling them that its a pc game thats causing it, their reply is pc games do not use p2p

I know this is probably just asking for trouble, especially when I can't see sense in InfinityWard's actions either, but maybe, just maybe, the letters are partly down to the players playing the game hours on end every day?

Whatever. Maybe someone with a bit more knowledge could help me out here, but how feasible, if at all, is it for IW to switch out the P2P method? Just a patch? Or is it a far bigger deal? If they WERE to bow to fan pressure, that is.

  2. JSocco says:

"IW.net forces a good portion of MW2 players to violate…" Excuse me? Forces? I'm sorry, but no one is forcing them to do anything. If your ISP penalizes you for playing MW2, call them and present your case. If they don't budge, stop playing the game or switch to another provider if MW2 is that critical to your survival.

    • Henry says:

Yeah, it's so easy to just switch to any hundreds of other cable providers in your area!

How dare you play a game you paid for for several hours a day, that is clearly in the wrong.

      • JSocco says:

If there is no other ISP then stop playing MW2. Get over it. This is not IW.net's fault. This is simply people finding a new angle on the same old "no dedicated = bad".

You signed the contract with your ISP. You should know the TOS that came along with it. You buy a game and in playing it, stand the chance of violating the TOS. It is not the game's publisher's fault.

    • JSocco SUCKS says:

JSocco, shut the fuck up you fucking idiot,it does force you because IWNet uses it and its not your fault,go fucking learn before you say shit you dont have a clue about.

  3. NotSoFail says:

Stop playing a game you paid $60 for? Switching ISPs because of a single game? Do you even read over what you just wrote?

And for your information, no dedicated = bad. There's no argument in that. None of this BS would have happened if IW stuck with dedis.

  4. name says:

o yea IW, IW net is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much better.

trust IW to give you a piece of shit and try to convince you its gold.

MW came out and i remember playing MP for 2 weeks straight on my ps3.

MW2 comes out and i cant play 1 bloody game because i either loos my connection or theres so much freaking lag!

not to mention every freaking time i turn on the game theres a bloody new update to download.

how many patches do they need to release?

o yea IW this is soooooooooo much better!

thats why uve needed to release a million and one patches for it, in the first month of release!

  5. Dirk says:

It is a video game not life and death, well except virtually. I suspect people are playing this game a lot and not just a few hours a day. I notice the people actually complaining about having there ISP shut them down haven't actually told us how many hours a day they play the game.

  6. KingKiff says:

If IW dont fix it with a ded server patch I'm not palying anymore… IW suck balls

    • KingDipShit says:

Like IW cares. You already purchased the game and one less online player is not going to hurt their feelings. If you thought no dedicated servers was bull and that "IW suck balls" then you should have boycotted your purchase as I did, but as it stands you look like a fool.

  7. suckmyleftnut says:

    @ KingKiff

Just like you boycotted the game right, right?

  8. Fail says:

Have you ever used Skype/ICQ/Messenger for hosting a conference call (phone/video) on your PC? because it's essentially the same

Did you ever host a multiplayer game session of Unreal/CS/Civilization 4 on your PC instead of connecting to a remote server? Because it's essentially the same

This demonstrates not how IWNET fails, but how your ISP fails (in case you're not bullshitting and you actually got such a letter from your ISP). The same issue will arise with any P2P application or game, so you have only your ISP to blame for such unrightful decisions (not the DSL/Cable operator, in case these are separate entities).

At least in the US there are regulations against traffic shaping, and the FCC already warned Comcast about interfering with network traffic:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comcast#Network_neut

If your ISP actually poses any unrightful restrictions against you, file a class action lawsuit against them. Chances are that if you hold these letters as a proff you can be compensated for millions (don't forget to thank IW for it)

  9. Guxha says:

I bought MW, and loved it, I played it very much.

    Then MW2 came out.

So, I downloaded it. Yes, I know its illegal. I dont care. I would have bought it if there was support for dedicated servers and for other stuff they left out (intentionally). So, IW intentionally leaves that out? Well, I then intentionally download a pirated version.

When BF:BC2 comes out next year, I sure as hell am gonna buy it. Because if they care for PC community, I care for them and want to support them as much as I can.

  10. max says:

Since no one has posted actual bandwidth usage stats for MW2, I'll give you mine. Played the biggest matches I could (ground war). DD-WRT tells me that when not hosting MW2 eats ~35kb/s up and down. Hosting a ground war match (dont remember, but think it was a full game) was 175kb/s to 350 kb/s during the match. If you played 12 hours a day it would add up, especially if you have the best connection and host often.

I have one question though – why no reports from xbox owners regarding ISP service issues? arent most xbox mp games p2p?

    • Kubra says:

Because the console players don't have computers worth doing anything on, hence they don't use bandwidth in other applications and don't reach the cap as quickly.

      • geejay says:

Most console owners also have at least one PC you fuckwit so use just the same bandwidth for non gaming activities as anyone else. In fact possibly more as both major consoles support live video and TV streaming.

        Tosser

  11. Jon Doe says:

All xbox games are p2p for the most part, unless the Dev makes dedicated servers(I've only hear drumors).

This is idiotic and evil ISPs to blame, not Iw, with the exception of using code that's just too bulky.

Also, the poster mentions havingto translate from his native language, it might not be america or some other off continent civilized place. Could be evil Zimbzbwe ISPs.

  12. MTG-CRASHBOX says:

Alot of you guys are either to narrow minded or just too stupid to realise that you have been ripped off by mw2

1:Infinity is saving money due to a no return policy on mw2

2:Infinity is not using there servers your using your own which potentially do open doors…and despite what the idiots say at infinity about opening Nat it does pose a threat " so wake up you thick idiots at infinity and understand servers/firewalls/udp/tcp. Ive Worked for IBM for 15 years head of network security without any breaches under my wing!!

3:Infinity is more than happy to see us spend our money before they even think about ie: aim bots,so called hackers, network latency,High Pings,

4:why don't infinity take a look at EA and learn from expertise and experience,They have it right and don't piss off there buyers and support them

5:If half of you wake up and actually complain then we might actually get somewhere…

6:Gaming hosting companies have been put on pause also as they cannot host mw2 which = less profits = fewer klans joining = outdated games = possible redundancies= closure of hosting companies

7:despite what infinity try to do in prevention of illegal downloads "they will never stop it!! wether its xbox,ps3,pc….as long as there is hardware engineers,crackers,coders,de-compilers and so forth the loss is infinities.

7:infinity wake up and listen to the community that pays your wages and puts the roof over the ceo's head…does he care about his staff i think not!!

    • upset-pc user says:

well said mtg-crashbox; it is good to see that someone has retained his powers of critical thinking. if pc gamers had stood together and not bought this piece of gaming junk instead of responding to the eye candy and buying we would have been heard.but it is a bit too late, IW has made milllions. however it is not to late for pc gamers to make a statement by boycotting IW in the future.

  13. Yeti says:

Well, stop using such shite ISPs then.

Mine is completely uncapped, I can run anything I want, anytime I want at all.
